Black bear injures wildlife worker

Conservation officers are looking for a black bear that attacked one of their colleagues north of Thunder Bay.

The Ministry of Natural Resources says a female wildlife assessment worker was attacked in the bush about half way between Thunder Bay and Armstrong, near Highway 527, on Tuesday.

"While the crew was working up new Wabikon Lake a bear approached the crew and attacked the girl shortly before 11:30 in the morning," ministry spokesperson Katherine Lyzun said. "The crew immediately contacted the MNR in Thunder Bay once the bear left the scene."

Lyzun won't comment on the nature of the injuries the 24-year-old woman suffered, but says she is recovering.

"All we really can say is that, yes, the crew member that was with her was able to scare the bear away from her," Lyzun said.

An MNR crew cleared an area in the dense bush so a helicopter could land and take the woman to Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre.

Conservation officers have set traps for the bear.
