An 11-year-old boy has been killed during a service elevator accident in a small community north of Kitchener, Ont.
Waterloo Regional Police said they received an emergency call at about 4 p.m. Wednesday and responded to a small bakery along a country road in the town of Winterbourne.
The boy, identified by an uncle as Wilford Gingrich, was suffering from serious head trauma when emergency crews arrived. Police said the boy was airlifted to a Hamilton hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.
Police said they aren't sure exactly how he was hurt but that the elevator did not fall.
The Ministry of Labour is investigating.
CBC reporter Charlsie Agro said she spoke with people inside the bakery who said the family is overcome with grief and are planning the boy's funeral.
