RCMP arrest suspect in Airdrie homicide
RCMP have made an arrest in connection to the death of 40-year-old Airdrie man Garland Curtis earlier this year.
Dustin Piper, 23, has been charged with first-degree murder and has been remanded into custody.
His first court appearance is scheduled for March 21 in Airdrie.
Police say that Piper and Curtis were acquaintances but it's not clear at this point how the two men knew each other.
Police became concerned after receiving a call from one of Curtis's Fort McMurray co-workers on Jan. 12 saying that Curtis had not been at work for several days.
When RCMP entered his house to check if he was okay, they found Curtis's body.
They also noticed that Curtis's car was missing.
Tips from the public led police to the car on Jan. 21, when it was found abandoned in Olds, Alta., 60 kilometres north of Airdrie.
In February, RCMP asked the public for help in creating a timeline for the vehicle's movements, which were thought to be limited to the area between Airdrie and Olds.
The investigation involved RCMP detachments in Airdrie, Red Deer, Fort McMurray and Olds, as well as major crimes units from Calgary, Edmonton and New Brunswick.
