2 arrested after attempt to ram police car

Two people are in custody after allegedly attempting to ram a car head-on into a police cruiser on Tuesday night.

Winnipeg police said officers in the marked cruiser swerved to avoid the collision, but it was still hit on the side. Both vehicles were damaged but no one was hurt.

The incident happened around 8 p.m. near Garlies Street and Machray Avenue in the city's North End. The suspects attempted to flee the scene in their vehicle, which had a blown tire.

They didn't make it far driving on the rim and decided to escape on foot, but were quickly apprehended, police said.

Two males — a youth and an adult — have been arrested and are in custody. The 17-year-old, who was driving the vehicle, had an electronic monitoring device on his ankle, police said.

The device is worn by individuals ordered by a court to abide by strict conditions as part of their freedom from being jailed.

Police said the car used by the suspects had a stolen licence plate, but it was not yet known if the vehicle itself had been stolen.
