Crews rushed to the scene of a fire at an asphalt plant on Lagimodiere Boulevard near Dugald Road on Thursday afternoon.

An explosion and fire at an asphalt plant in east Winnipeg temporarily closed a major street during rush hour Thursday.

Fire broke out at about 3 p.m. CT at McAsphalt Industries Ltd. near the intersection of Dugald Road and Lagimodiere Boulevard.

One of about 12 towers holding asphalt on the complex caught fire and billowed inky black smoke over the area.

But it was the loud bang before the blaze that caught people's attention, one witness suggested.

"Everybody was quite surprised," said Kathi Belcourt, who works at a business across the street from the plant.

"We're in a steel building and we thought it was just a big bang in our archive area above our offices," she said.

Fire crews had the fire under control quickly. By about 4:30 p.m., northbound traffic along Lagimodiere was proceeding as normal.

An investigation is underway to discover how the fire started.
