Principal's plea delayed for 2nd time

A high school principal from the Miramichi area, who is facing four sex charges involving children, is now expected to enter a plea on August 27.

Kirk Matheson, 37, the principal of North and South Esk Regional High School in Sunny Corner, is charged with possession of child pornography, two charges of using a computer to contact two separate minors with the purpose of committing an offence, and one charge of attempting to commission child pornography.

Matheson was supposed to enter his plea on Monday afternoon but his lawyers have asked for a second extension to review documents.

The RCMP allege Matheson, who was also the school's volleyball coach, was posing on the internet as a woman and trying to entice boys to send him nude photos of themselves.

Matheson, who remains released on several conditions, was greeted by several angry people during his last court appearance in June.

The case was adjourned without election or plea at the request of Matheson's lawyer, who said he was awaiting further disclosure from the Crown.

The RCMP have identified two alleged victims from the Miramichi area.

The alleged offences occurred between February and April of this year.

Matheson was arrested at his home on April 20 after the RCMP Internet Child Exploitation Unit received information.

He has been ordered to stay away from the school, to have no direct or indirect contact with anyone under the age of 18, with the exception of his niece and nephew in the presence of one of their parents, and not to use a computer or any other data-sharing device.
