The investigation into a clandestine drug lab that was discovered on Albany Street in St. John's is over — and the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary now know what drugs were being made.
A routine emergency call Sept. 21, 2012 turned into much more when paramedics came across a plethora of chemicals. The RNC said they found potentially explosive chemicals, and evacuated dozens of homes in the area as a precaution.
In a scrum held for media Wednesday afternoon, Insp. Marlene Jesso said the chemicals seized would not be found in a hardware store.
"The ones that we found were chemical pharmaceuticals," said Jesso. "They are 95.5 per cent pure and you can only buy them in chemical stores. These chemicals are illegal. They are under the pre-cursor regulations under the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act, and you are not allowed to have them."
Jesso says officers found all but one of the ingredients needed to make methamphetamine. They also found the ingredients needed to make harmaline and DMT, both mild hallucinogens that Jesso said have a stronger effect when mixed together.
"It's very potent, it doesn't metabolize in your system … so it gets into your system very fast and it has a really long high," said Jesso.
The RNC believes all the ingredients — including two types of exotic tree branch — were ordered online.
Jesso added they have no reason to believe more than one person was involved. That person died in hospital shortly after the secret lab was discovered.
The victim's mother said he died of diabetes.
Police said since the suspect is deceased, no charges will be laid.
