Escaped inmate found hiding under a pile of leaves

Fredericton police spent the early hours of Sunday morning combing through a downtown neighbourhood looking for a man wanted on a Canada-wide warrant.

Sgt. Paul Battiste said officers first responded to a disturbance call at the Twenty-20 nightclub on Regent Street.

When they arrived witnesses described a man who fit the description of someone who had escaped from the Parrtown Community Correctional Centre in mid-October.

He fled and up to 12 officers cordoned off a few residential blocks nearby.

“Nine of which were probably in police cruisers. Three of us on foot. For about an hour we had every police officer who wasn’t tied up on other calls looking for this individual,” Battiste said.

Neighbours called in with tips about a man running through the neighbourhood.

The suspect was found at 2 a.m. hiding under a pile of leaves in someone's back yard, two blocks away near Saint John Street.

“Hidden, covered in some leaves trying to escape detection, I guess,” said Battiste.

The 24-year-old is in custody and will be sent back to Parrtown later on Sunday.

His name has not been released.

Parrtown is a federal institution for conditionally released inmates.
