Man dies in Meadow Lake armed standoff

A 37-year-old man has died following an overnight armed standoff with RCMP in a garage near Meadow Lake, Sask.

RCMP say they were called on Saturday afternoon to a local gas station, on reports of an alleged armed robbery involving a man using a .22-calibre rifle.

At around 4 p.m. CST, officers located the suspect in his vehicle and a chase ensued, with the man driving through a field. In a release, police say the man fired two rounds from his firearm during the pursuit, but no one was hurt.

The man eventually drove to a garage at a rural property, about 6½ kilometres west of Meadow Lake, where he stayed throughout the night.

RCMP say officers communicated with the man during the night, but at about 5:50 a.m. Sunday he was taken to the local hospital with what police described as a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

The man was pronounced dead in hospital shortly after he arrived, police said in a news release.

RCMP did not release the man's name. The incident is under investigation.
