A funeral was held Saturday for a father and daughter who died in a head-on collision with an alleged drunk driver.
Antonette Wijeratne cried out as she was lifted out of an ambulance and wheeled into St. Jude's Church on Weston Road for the funeral of her husband, Neil, and their 16-year-old daughter, Eleesha.
The crash occurred in the early hours of August 5, when the three family members were driving home from Florida.
Police said their mini-van was merging onto Highway 427 from the Queen Elizabeth Way, they were struck by a GMC Envoy that was going the wrong way.
Neil and Eleesha died at the scene. Antonette broke multiple bones.
Her 19-year-old son, Brian, stayed home from the U.S. trip to study for an exam. He has stayed by his mother’s side during her recovery.
Charges are pending against the 19-year-old driver of the Envoy. After the collision, he was put under arrest for impaired driving.
Police plan to charge him next week.
