A woman from Clayton, Ont., recovering from a serious double-lung transplant is now struggling to pay hefty medical bills.

Dew Rotor, 33, has pulmonary fibrosis — the same disease that plagues Ottawa’s Hélène Campbell.

Rotor had been ill for about a decade before she was diagnosed earlier this year. Like Campbell, Rotor and her mother, Leslierae, were forced to move to Toronto as they waited for the transplant and continue to live there as Dew rehabilitates.

There was a scare after an infection took Rotor off the transplant list and her family believed she had only days left, but then three days later she did receive her new lungs at the Toronto General Hospital.

“The doctors feel that she would only have had three or four days to live when she did receive her lungs,” said Elizabeth Hare, Dew’s friend.

Family seeks $30K of help

Hare helped organize a fundraiser on Saturday night at the Carleton Place arena to help raise $30,000.

Leslierae Rotor had to quit her job to take car of her daughter full-time. Friends said the family is also having trouble pay for their home while they are temporarily relocated.

The money will pay for the trip to Toronto and cover off the piling costs for the family, friends said.

As she continues to battle with her new lungs, the family continues to fight financial restraints and friends are trying to ease that burden.

The fundraiser Saturday night included an auction and gathered donations for Dew.

“They don't even know her and yet people are digging deep and they’re giving things, so many wonderful things that we can use at our auction,” said Angie Samson, another of Dew’s friends.
