The Brampton Battalion is one step closer to finalizing their 2012-2013 Ontario Hockey League roster.

After putting 49 hopefuls through physicals, fitness testing, practices and three intra-squad games since Wednesday, head coach Stan Butler and his staff pared the roster down to 27 following Saturday morning action. The remaining recruits will see exhibition action.

And they won’t have to wait long to get into action. They travel to the Waterloo Recreation Centre in Waterloo tomorrow (Sunday) to tangle with the Kitchener Rangers. The two sides play a return engagement back at the Powerade Centre on Monday at 2 p.m.

The Battalion breaks camp with three goaltenders, eight defencemen and 16 forwards in tow.

Veteran Matej Machovsky is expected to see the bulk of the playing time this season with Jake Smith and Lee Doherty still in camp.

On the blueline, the veteran group of Cameron Wind, Zach Bell, Marcus McIvor, Dylan Blujus, Spencer Abraham and Brenden Miller will be joined by the recently signed Mark Raycroft and Kyle Wood, a 2012 draft pick.

Up front the Troops break camp with 10 players who have OHL experience, including Brampton native Nick Foglia, who was acquired in an off-season trade with the Ottawa 67’s. Goaltender Keegan Wilson went the other way.

Players who saw time with the Troops last season include Brandon Robinson, Patrik Machac, Derek Froats, Connor Jarvis, Jamie Lewis, Barclay Goodrow, Matt MacLeod, Brennan Feasey and Geoff Bezruchko. Newcomers who have enlisted include 2012 draft selections Mike Amadio, Brent Clarke and Nick Paul. Matt Bragagnolo, Matt Santos and Mitch Amante are also still seeking employment with the OHL club.
