Buses to switch back to 20 minute service during peak hours
It looks as if Guelph’s bus service will be switching back to 20 minute service during peak hours.
GUELPH — It looks as if Guelph’s bus service will be switching back to 20 minute service during peak hours.
Buses have been operating on a 15-minute frequency during peak hours, but are having trouble keeping up, causing many passengers to miss connecting buses.
Guelph Transit’s own data shows roughly 25 per cent of connections are being missed because there is insufficient time to complete routes during peak times of day.
At the Dec. 17 meeting of Guelph City Council, Guelph Transit staff will recommend to council that bus service switch to 20-minute intervals. If approved, the change will take place Feb 3.
“Customer service is a key focus for the City of Guelph and a priority for Guelph Transit. We recognize the current schedule is not serving the needs and expectations of the community,” Guelph Transit general manager Michael Anders said in a news release.
Road construction, traffic congestion and weather are all making it difficult to meet the 15-minute schedule, particularly between the busiest times of 8:15 a.m. to 9:15 a.m. and 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. Thirty-minute service will continue during nonpeak times.
The recommended change comes almost a year after the implementation of the Transit Growth Strategy, which called for new routes and schedules to improve efficiency and offer better, more direct and more frequent service.
Since the 15-minute schedule took effect last January, there have been complaints from riders regarding route timing, missed transfers and connections.
The news release said that staff’s recommendation to switch to 20 minute peak service and continue 30 minute off-peak service is “in direct response feedback from riders and operators and in the interest of improving customer service.”
