Three people were killed and five others were injured in a head-on crash near St. Catharines early Friday morning.
Three people are dead and five injured after a head-on car crash in Pelham early this morning.
A car with four people was westbound on Reg. Road #20 in Pelham when it drifted into the eastbound lane just after 1 a.m., hitting an oncoming SUV with four people, police said.
The car burst into flames, killing three of the four people inside, while the SUV ended up in a ditch near the intersection of Victoria Ave. and Reg. Road 20.
Four people were rushed to hospital with serious injuries. A fifth, in his 60s, was airlifted to Hamilton for treatment.
Jeff Youngblood, whose father was airlifted, said his parents and two of their friends were returning from the Hamilton airport after a trip to Calgary at the time of crash.
He says his mother and her friends have been treated and released from hospital.
Police have not released the names of the three victims.
Const. Richard Gadreau of the Niagara Regional Police says one small SUV and one car, approaching from opposite directions, were involved in the crash.
“The westbound vehicle drifted across into the eastbound lanes, causing a head-on collision,” he said from a media briefing at the scene.
Police are looking at whether speed and alcohol were factors.
A stretch of road between Victoria and Brady Street is closed for an investigation and will re-open at about 10:30 a.m., police said.
