The funeral for a woman killed in a Highway 56 crash in Glanbrook is set for Friday at the chapel of Bay Gardens Funeral Home on Rymal Road East.
Irene Gelinas, 56, died July 6 after the car she was a passenger in collided with a water truck at the rural intersection of Highway 56 and Haldibrook Road.
The driver of the silver Toyota Matrix, her husband Robert, 59, was taken to Hamilton General Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries and has since been released. The driver of the water truck was not hurt.
“She was an amazing woman,” her son Tom Warren, 37, said Wednesday. “Dad is having a very hard time coping with this.”
Warren said “to know my mother was to know someone who was so full of life.”
He recalled when his own daughter passed away and his mother “was there for me, and stayed with me ... she never left.”
Her sister Deb and brother-in-law Les, in a posting on the funeral home's book of condolences called the mother of four “unforgettable, irreplaceable.”
According to the family, Gelinas had 20 siblings and eight grandchildren. Another son, Dan, died in 1975.
Hamilton police have completed their investigation into the crash, which occurred around 8:45 a.m. Friday. They appealed for witnesses and Detective Constable Walter Niblock said about half-a-dozen came forward.
Police say the Toyota was northbound on Highway 56 approaching Haldibrook and trying to turn westbound when the southbound water truck struck the car.
Police say the driver of the car had a “partially obstructed view.”
Irene Gelinas was pronounced dead at the scene.
Visitation continues today at Bay Gardens, 947 Rymal Rd. E., from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. The hour-long funeral is scheduled for 10 a.m. in the chapel of the funeral home. Burial will follow at Woodland Cemetery.
