OSHAWA -- City officials are asking Oshawa residents to clear their sidewalks in a timely fashion after a snowfall.

Residents, businesses and landlords are being asked to completely clear snow and ice from sidewalks adjacent to their properties by midnight of the first day after a snowfall. They're also being asked to make sure they clear snow around fire hydrants if one is located in front of their homes.

Oshawa Fire Services is advising residents that snow should be removed around all doors that are used as exits and around furnace vents. Fire officials say it's crucial that doors, stairways and fire escapes be cleared of snow in the event of a fire.

During winter months, on-street parking is prohibited between 3 and 6 a.m. until April 1. Residents can ask for an occasional use parking permit that allows overnight street parking by calling Service Oshawa at 905-436-3311.

Cars parked on the road at any time of day that impede snow clearing can be tagged or towed away, regardless of whether they have a parking permit.
