Medal haul for NRA track club
Members of the Niagara Regional Athletics Track and Field Club gather with medals they recently won during the International Youth Meet of Champions at the Toronto Track and Field Centre at York University recently.
Sarah Saldutto soared through the air like a bird coming in for a landing.
She crashed into the sand of the long jump pit at the 14-acre Toronto Track and Field Centre at York University and stood up a champion.
The Port Colborne native set a new meet record for the atom girls long jump with a distance of 4.69 metres as she was awarded a gold medal at the International Youth Meet of Champions.
Saldutto, who has only been a member of Niagara Regional Athletics Track and Field Club for two months, also claimed silver medals in the 60-metre and 150-metre dashes.
Niagara Regional Athletics placed fifth among 43 other track and field clubs at the Invitational, which ran from Dec. 7-8.
Victoria Fair earned a total of five medals, including a gold medal in the bantam girls high jump with a height of 1.49m. She brought home bronze medals in the 150m dash and long jump and a pair of silvers from the 300m dash and 3kg shot put events.
Abby Stewart was awarded a gold medal with a 2-kg shot put distance of 7.42m. She also picked up a silver during the tyke girls 300-metre run with a time of 52.93.
Ava Lawson, Tristan McDougall, Daniel Soppitt, Isaac Soppitt and Kyle Dykstra also competed in the tyke division.
In the atom girls shot put, Emma McDougall claimed a gold with a 7.44m distance.
Olivia Galas won silver in the long jump (4.26m) and bronze in the 60m dash (8.76).
For the boys, Caleb Fretz was the second runner to cross the finish line for a silver medal in the atom boys 1,200m run (4:11.25). He also added a bronze in the 800m run.
Andrew Smith recorded a gold-medal long jump in the atom boys group.
Ashton Brookson came in third during the 60m dash, Derian Free secured a silver in the 800m run while Abbey Bilotta and Katie Sullivan also completed their events.
In the bantam boys and girls divisions, Caitlin Hamm mined gold in the triple jump, Brock Deba won bronze in the 2,000m run while Ethan Ratcliffe, Aron Weaver, Sydney Tomaino, Caitlin Deruiter, Emily Stewart and Ally Taylor assisted in garnering points for their track club.
Joe Murdaca was golden in the midget boys high jump with a height of 1.84m.
Levi Fretz, Sam Greenlaw, and Lea Ann Skulj also competed at the midget boys and girls level.
JT Hunt leapt to a first-place height of 1.95m in the youth boys high jump.
David Kapetanovic won silver in the long jump.
Lauren Hines hit a distance of 10.73m for a gold in the girls youth triple jump. She also earned a bronze during the long jump event.
Amanda Reid also collected a bronze in the triple jump. Mary Soppitt, Shane Harding and Cam Parry also laced up for NRA.
