The coffin of the late NDP leader Jack Layton sits under a spotlight during his state funeral at Roy Thomson Hall in Toronto on Aug. 27, 2011.

About 1,700 invited guests attended the funderal, including the governor general and his wife, current Prime Minister Stephen Harper and wife Laureen, former prime ministers Jean Chrétien and Paul Martin, and the interim NDP, Liberal and Bloc Québécois leaders.

Earlier in the week Harper announced that Layton would be receiving state honours. The NDP leader's death sparked an "extraordinary and emotional week," Harper said just before the service began.
