Northern development a top priority in Nunavut
Nunavut was the site of a tragic plane crash that killed 12 people in August, just ahead of the prime minister's visit to the territory. Harper toured the roaring Meadowbank gold mine near Baker Lake, currently Nunavut's only operating mine, but many more are promised. The prime minister made no apologies for his development-heavy strategy to boost the northern economy, and stressed the importance of capitalizing on rising gold prices.
