Fredericton-area brides who are upset about the unexpected closure of a local bridal boutique are being advised to file an official police complaint if they want to see a criminal investigation.

The Fredericton Police Force says it has received a number of inquiries over the past few days regarding individual dealings with Sparkle Bridal Boutique, which closed on Tuesday.

"At this time, without an investigation, it cannot be determined if this is a civil matter or criminal in nature," police said in a statement on Friday. "The nature of criminality can only be determined through investigation.

"In order to investigate, complainants must report incidents to the Fredericton Police Force, and must supply as much information as possible."

Sparkle Bridal Boutique shut its doors suddenly on Tuesday and posted a sign in the window, apologizing for any inconvenience.

On Thursday, Fredericton police were called to deal with a crowd of angry customers.

Several brides and bridesmaids were outside the store at 88 York St. to find out about their gown orders.

Const. David Beck confirmed the boutique is going out of business. But he said the owners were contacting the vendors who were supplying them with the ordered dresses in order to give them the contact information of the customers.

Anyone who wants to file a complaint about Sparkle Bridal Boutique should have all documentation they have received from the company, including proof of payments, police said in the statement.

"Having all of the relevant information in hand when you come to make your complaint will expedite the process of getting the information into the hands of the investigators."
