B.C. Mounties threatened, fired upon at Tsilhqot'in reserve

Mounties in B.C.'s Central Interior say they were shot at as they tried to track down a man who threatened an RCMP officer on a Tsilhqot'in nation reserve early Sunday morning.

North District RCMP spokesman Cpl. Dave Tyreman says despite the potential for serious injury, no one was hurt.

The string of events began to unfold in the community of Tl'etinqox, or Anaham, at 1 a.m. PT, when an Alexis Creek RCMP officer arrested a man suspected of trying to steal a pickup truck.

"While the officer was dealing with the man in custody, two other men, one of them armed with a knife approached the arresting officer and threatened him," Tyreman said in a written statement.

When backup arrived and began searching for those two men, who had by then run off, one or more people fired at the officers.

"During the search, several shots were fired at police at two different time intervals," Tyreman said.

Alexis Creek RCMP is seeking information regarding the incident through the detachment at 250-394-4211 or through Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.

Alexis Creek and the Anaham Reserve are roughly 100 km west of Williams Lake along Highway 20.
