Sci-fi series Orphan Black, TV comedy Less Than Kind and Denis Villeneuve's psychological thriller Enemy are among the top nominees for the Canadian Screen Awards.

Organizers unveiled film, television and digital media contenders in dozens of categories at a packed press event in Toronto today.

“This was a year marked by a record-breaking number of submissions, reflecting a robust level of activity in the screen-based industries in Canada, which we will celebrate during Canadian Screen Week from March 3-9," said Martin Katz, chair of the Academy of Canadian Cinema and Television.

Orphan Black is among the front-runners, picking up 14 nominations overall, including best dramatic series and lead actress in a continuing dramatic role for Tatiana Maslany. Regina-born Maslany, who was also a Golden Globe nominee for her Orphan Black role, earned a second lead actress nod in the CSA film categories for Cas & Dylan.

Dysfunctional family sitcom Less Than Kind wasn't far behind with its 12 nominations, with nods for its actors, writing and directing.

Other leading TV nominees include:

- Rookie Blue.

- Call Me Fitz.

- Flashpoint.

- Seed.

- The Borgias.

- CBC News: The National.

- CTV News.

- Bomb Girls.

- Global News.

- CBC's Hockey Night in Canada.

- The Juno Awards 2013.

- Satisfaction.

- Vikings.

Based on José Saramago's 2002 novel The Double, Enemy earned 10 nominations, including best film, best director for Villeneuve and acting nods for Jake Gyllenhaal and Sarah Gadon.

Other leading film nominees include:

- Tom à la Ferme.

- Gabrielle.

- Maïna.

- The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones.

- The Dismantlement.

- Empire of Dirt.

- The F-Word.

Katz also revealed The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones as the winner of the 2013 Golden Reel Award, which celebrates the homegrown film with the biggest Canadian box office. The film grossed more than $5.2 million in Canada and the win marks an eighth Golden Reel crown for producer Don Carmondy.

Awarded for the first time in 2013, the fledgling, omnibus Canadian Screen Awards combine the previously separate Genie Awards (the Canadian honour for English- and French-language films) and Gemini Awards (Canada's prize for English- and French-language TV and digital programming).

This year's awards will conclude Canadian Screen Week, seven days of industry conferences, celebrations and events running March 3-9. The televised CSA gala will air on March 9 from Toronto's Sony Centre for the Arts, with Canadian funnyman Martin Short returning as host. The show will be broadcast on CBC-TV.
