Paola Ortiz is returning to Montreal, seven months after she was deported to Mexico.
Canadian immigration officials have granted the mother of two permanent resident status.
Ortiz came to Canada in 2006 to escape what she called an abusive relationship. She told authorities that a former boyfriend, a Mexican federal police officer, beat her, sexually assaulted her and once kept her imprisoned for several days.
The Canadian government refused her bid to remain as a refugee last year, arguing that Mexico could provide adequate protection to victims of domestic violence.
She was deported in September, but left her two children with family in Canada.
Ortiz’s son and daughter, who are both less than five years of age and were born in Canada, were allowed to stay in the country.
She is expected to arrive at Montreal’s Trudeau airport on a 7:40 a.m. ET flight today from Mexico.
