The father of a Canadian man missing in New Zealand has travelled to the country to aid in the search, now dubbed a recovery effort by the nation's police.
"I don’t think I could live with myself if I didn’t come," Michael Hayes told New Zealand newspaper The Press. "You'd second-guess yourself the rest of your life. I could have been the one that found him. I still may be the one that finds him."
His son, Connor Hayes, 25, and his son's girlfriend, Joanna Lam, 24, were travelling together around the country before Lam was to start work as a medical imaging specialist for the radiology department of a local health board on New Zealand's South Island.
The couple were last seen Sept. 10, and were declared missing when Lam failed to arrive for her first day of work.
New Zealand police found what they believe to be Lam's body on a beach near where the fuel tank from the couple's rented vehicle was recovered earlier.
Police have said the van was likely swept away in fast-moving floodwaters. The area between Haast and Knights Point on South Island, where wreckage of the vehicle was found, had recently experienced a bad storm. There have been a number of landslides at a mountain pass close to where the couple's vehicle was found.
Connor Hayes has not yet been found, though police and volunteers have continued limited search efforts.
Michael Hayes and his wife, Lorraine Tetreault, are in Haast to conduct a weeklong search.
