John Greyson and Tarek Loubani posted a one-minute and six-second video on YouTube to say a simple hello and thanks from Egypt.
"Fifty days inside, three days outside, we thought we'd say 'hi,'" Greyson says to begin the video.
It is the first time the two have been seen since their detention.
The two Canadians — Greyson a Toronto filmmaker and Loubani an emergency room doctor in London, Ont. — were in an Egyptian prison for 50 days before they were released on Sunday. They have not been allowed to leave the country for the past three days.
"We're stuck a bit, the ordeal's not over," Greyson says on the video. "But for now we thought we'd say: 'Hi, peace.'"
The release of Greyson and Loubani has become a point of rally in Canada since their detention, with star filmmakers at the Toronto International Film Festival pleading for their release and the hashtag #freejohnandtarek going viral on Twitter.
Loubani added: "And also very importantly, thank you. Thank you so much for all of your support, thank you so much for all of you help, and thank you so much for all you have done for us."
The two men's delayed departure is the latest twist in a struggle for their release that their friends and family have described as a "roller-coaster ride."
Loubani travelled to Egypt to train emergency doctors in Gaza, and Greyson was there to observe and document that work.
One day after arriving in the country, the pair attempted to cross the border into Gaza. When they were turned back, they returned to Cairo, where protesters were swarming the streets demanding the release of ousted president Mohammed Morsi. They were arrested in that protest.
The men, who smile through the entire clip, end the video with "hope to see you soon."
