New Boston Marathon security plans released

Boston Marathon and public safety officials are holding a news conference at 11:30 a.m. ET to detail security measures in place for this year’s race.

Security for the April 21 marathon is being beefed up after a twin bombing near the finish line of last year’s race killed three people and injured more than 260.

Monday’s meeting in Framingham, Mass., includes members from local, state and federal law enforcement agencies, as well as the Boston Athletics Association. Some new regulations, including the banning of runners’ bags, have already been revealed ahead of this year’s race.

Despite the 2013 tragedy, race organizers are expecting about 36,000 runners and a million spectators.

The Boston Marathon — one of the world’s top races — takes place on Patriots’ Day in Massachusetts, allowing huge numbers of fans to watch runners tackle the 42.2 kilometre course.
