TEHRAN, Iran - Iranian state TV says authorities have hanged seven people convicted of drug trafficking.

The report says the executions were carried out Thursday in a prison in the city of Karaj, some 25 miles (45 kilometres) west of the capital, Tehran.

Judiciary officials had warned in recent weeks that they would clamp down on offences such as drug trafficking and rape.

Tehran does not officially publish the number of executions in the country. However, human rights groups say Iran has hanged dozens of people since the new year began.

Murder, rape, armed robbery, kidnapping and drug trafficking are crimes punishable with the death penalty in Iran.
